Up In The Air is a comedy/romantic/drama starring George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a man hired by corporations across America to fire their employees for them. When a young woman comes along with a supposedly innovative idea for the company, it changes Ryan’s life.
There isn’t much to the plot but it doesn’t get boring. The basis of it all is Ryan’s loneliness and the fact that he is travelling so often distracts him from what he really wants in life. It’s brilliantly directed with fantastic editing through and through, and while the direction was what kept the film visually beautiful, the editing kept it fast paced and continuously moving forward meaning there was never a dull moment in it.
Vera Farmiga, who stars as Ryan’s love interest, is unmitigated throughout and really stands out in this film, yet I have to say I haven’t seen her in many other films. Based on this and Source Code which I also watched recently, I think she is going to be a huge star!
Overall the only complaint I may have, at a push, is that the genre was somewhat confused – it was funny, but there wasn’t quite enough comedy to let it fall into that genre, I don’t know why it was classified as a drama because there was only one of two elements of drama in the entire film, and as for the romance; romantic moments were few and far between and not very romantic at all. Having said all that, it was very enjoyable to watch!
