Day 69: The Princess and the Frog (Clements & Musker, 2009)

From the directors of the Disney Classics, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid comes The Princess and the Frog, only not quite as the fairy tale told it. Set in New Orleans’ jazz era a young woman, Tiana, dreams of owning her own restaurant and works day and night to save up for it. Her spoilt friend, Charlotte however, leeches of her father and dreams of marrying a prince.

After being lured in by ‘the shadow man’ a prince visiting New Orleans in turned into a frog and his malicious sidekick takes his place, disguised with voodoo magic. Thinking that Tiana is a princess, the prince kisses her and she turns into a frog too!

The film is very funny with a quality surprisingly similar to the late 80s and early 90s Disney films. The animation screams quality and it is absolutely fascinating to watch. It’s clear from this film that Disney haven’t been taken over by Pixar, and that they can still make true classics. This is one that will be remembered for a long time and can comfortably sit among the rest of the Disney films.

5 star film
