Relatively new director, Greg Berlanti, tries his hand at an odd combination of comedy and drama with a story about a couple who tragically die in a car accident, leaving their baby daughter, Sophie, to their two single friends who incidentally hate each other. Together they have to raise Sophie, neither of them having had any experience with small children. After being thrown into a family that neither of them were expecting to have at that stage in their lives they experience highs and lows which play the part of the comedic and dramatic aspects of the film respectively.
The film is a see-saw of emotions between the comedy and drama, swinging dramatically from one to the other at regular intervals, which not only keeps the viewer interested, but it also a very difficult balance to achieve, and the fact that it is both funny and heart breaking in equal measure is a real credit to the writers and the director. Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl play off each other well and are both equally compelling in their roles. However, as impressed as I was by their acting and by the director’s skills in balancing comedy and drama, there felt like there was something missing from it all. Whether the script was not quite compelling enough or whether it was simply plot or specific scenes is difficult to pinpoint, but as enjoyable as it was, it passes at an average standard and is not a film to remember. But a very nice try…
