Day 60: Orange County (Kasdan, 2002)

MTV really let themselves go with this 2002 “comedy” about a boy trying to get into the university of his dreams. Colin Hanks and Jack Black star as brothers on a mission with outrageous and predictable happenings.

Director, Jake Kasdan, also directed Bad Teacher which I have recently watched and reviewed in this blog, and with this as supporting evidence I can safely say that he is no Steven Spielberg. His direction is not terrible but more mundane. He doesn’t fully utilise the camera to enhance the comedy, and due to a poorly written script, it could have done with a lot of that. I have to say that I have seen worse comedies, since I knew when I was supposed to laugh during this film and others I have simple not understood it for whatever reason, but even the cast seemed bored with the material. If I remember correctly there was one slightly humerous part, but the rest could only have been funny for the American Pie generation who, let’s face it, don’t really know what a real comedy is…

Overall it’s not worth watching since a comedy that doesn’t make you laugh is like a bra that doesn’t support your chest properly – pointless, uncomfortable and downhill from here.

2 star film
