Day 58: Old School (Phillips, 2003)

Old School is a classic ‘Frat Pack’ comedy from one of the earlier stages in their careers. This film is about three men who get bored of the ‘married with children’ lifestyle and attempt to create a college fraternity. The storyline could not be simpler and there are no plot points that you particularly have to worry about or concentrate on – whether this film is about middle aged men creating a fraternity or not, the comedy in it would pretty much cover every plot.

Will Ferrell is, as always, hilarious and Luke Wilson’s subtler comedic style plays well as a contrast. For those of you who think that Vince Vaughn is not your cup of tea may think again after watching this, and the only reason I bring up Vaughn as potentially ‘not someone’s cup of tea’ is because I watched this with someone who thought exactly this, and I caught him laughing at all of his lines. One point particularly about Vaughn is that his comedic style has been over exaggerated in recent years, in that he has managed to take a simple style of comedy and try to turn it into something more complicated than what it is in attempt to get more laughs. Old School does display the best of Vaughn and Wilson, although Ferrell on his own is always at the top of his game – regardless of how good or bad the film itself may be.

A rather large team of writers turned this film from what could have been a cringe-fest to a well thought out and clever comedy with less laughs than you were hoping for given any kind of hype you may have heard about it, but enough to keep you well entertained throughout.

4 star film
