From the director of Orange County comes a film about Elizabeth Halsey (Diaz), a rude, anti-social bad-ass who doesn’t care about anything but getting a boob job. Working as a teacher she gets by doing the bare minimum showing movies all year to her classes. When she finds out about the teachers bonus for the teacher who manages to achieve the highest class score in the final exams, she goes more than out of her way to get the bonus.
Cameron Diaz is brilliant in this film playing a role that is so dissimilar to anything she has ever done before, and she pulls it off so well. I am a huge fan of Diaz and have always believed that she had a great comic talent, and before anyone disagrees with me (hopefully no one will) they should watch this first. She has a quick wit and brilliant timing, and her character’s attitude is one that I never thought would suit Diaz’s nice-girl look, but it really does.
The comedy itself is a lot more ‘out there’ than you might think which is surprising and therefore makes it funnier than it probably should be. It isn’t a bad comedy but it isn’t a great one either, although I do think it’s more than average… This one is a tough one because if they hadn’t addressed so many taboos in such a hilarious way it definitely wouldn’t have been this good, but then again it’s not ‘laugh a minute’ stuff either.
Laughs are few and far between but when they are there, they hit you hard… Enjoyable but probably not as funny second time round.
