Day 52: The Mighty Ducks (Herek, 1992)

Emilio Estevez is Gordon Bombay, a big time lawyer who gets booked for drink driving. After working his magic on the judge he gets his sentence reduced to community service coaching a local little league ice hockey team. Of course, since his childhood where he missed the winning penalty shot in the championship, he hates ice hockey and apparently hates children too. In true Disney form he learns about teamwork and trust while simultaneously rediscovering his love for hockey, befriending the team members.

It would be unfair to criticise the predictability of this film since it is for kids, but apart from that it is an enjoyable film although not exactly a classic. Emilio Estevez makes the film more enjoyable with his boyish charm and the kids are all equally charming too and all surprisingly good actors – not that it’s difficult to find good child actors nowadays, but in this class of film, with a live action Disney film, sometimes it does result in a shameless hash of a cast.

It won’t be remembered as one of the better Disney movies, at least not by myself, but it’s still a good one for the kids to watch and I probably enjoyed it too much considering my age too…

3 star film
