This 1994 sequel to the originally titled ‘The Mighty Ducks’ (now called ‘Champions’ for some reason) is pretty much exactly the same as the first film but with the added sensation of desperation. It feels like they rehashed the plot of the first film and then filled in the gaps with some PG rated smack talk, throwing off audiences with new cast members and a more competitive bad guy.
Everything that needs to be said about this film can also be said of the first film so you can check out that review on this blog if you like, but what’s new to this instalment is the terrible direction of the camera and of the cast. The cast’s abilities have not at all decreased but the way in which Weisman (as opposed to Herek, who directed the first film) directs the camera does nothing at all for them. The camera is supposed to highlight the actors best bits and mask their worst, but I think Weisman got this all wrong in this film. Don’t get me wrong, it was still enjoyable and perhaps as enjoyable as the first if I hadn’t seen it before this one, but watching them immediately after each other makes it feel like a repeat.
The verdict: Not as good as the first, but still an okay film – probably a little less than average viewing.
