Day 51: The Scorpion King (Russell, 2002)

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as Mathayus, a warrior trying to free a nation enslaved by The Scorpion King. There isn’t much to the plot, in fact, that’s it… And I guess maybe because this film stars The Rock, I really wanted to like it. I knew it wasn’t going to be anything special but I thought that at least it would be so bad it was funny – it wasn’t. This film is just painfully weak in every aspect of its production and it does feel like the concept was knocked together in a day, purely to jump start Johnson’s movie career. Where it may have succeeded in this, no entertainment value at all can be derived from this shameless waste of Hollywood’s time and money.

I might be being a little dramatic about exactly how terrible it was, but I was sorely disappointed by the fact that I couldn’t even laugh at how terrible it was – it was just embarrassing! The acting was mostly okay and surprisingly good from Dwayne Johnson considering that this was at the dawn of his acting career and the direction is not so bad but understandably average considering Russell’s past movies (The Mask).

I think the reason I was so disappointed with this film is that the fundamental aspect of this movie in particular is the plot. The thing that stands out most, and was intended to stand out most, is the storyline, and it was not very well thought out, and incredibly weak.

2 star film
