Day 26: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Hood, 2009)

Hugh Jackman stars as Wolverine in this X-Men prequel focusing on Wolverine himself. The story describes his life before he met the other X-Men and mostly his military career and family life.

It didn’t have the same kind of feeling as the other X-Men films or series, so it wasn’t the most captivating film but it worked well as a stand alone action film. The casting was unusual to say the least – Liev Schreiber as Wolverine’s brother, Victor, and Ryan Reynolds playing an annoying soldier fighting alongside Logan, turned super-mutant-killer towards the end. The acting is good, don’t get me wrong, but with Reynolds’ comedy background and Schreiber’s impressive theatrical background, I never pictured either in an action/superhero flick.

The cinematography is visually stunning and everything you would want in an action film, but it’s also a cunning way of distracting from the plot and the level of action, which was disappointing and not as expected. Yes, there was a certain amount of action but the excitement level was poor, and the plot felt pretty half-arsed.
Overall it was an okay film – not a great X-Men film but a good film on it’s own, and if not for the direction by Gavin Wood, it would have been noticeably worse.

3 star film
