Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Renee Zellweger make up an all star cast in this underwater animation about a small fish, Oscar (voiced by Smith) going into partnership with a shark (Black) to pretend to be a ‘shark slayer’. Even for a child’s film it isn’t a very good set up; the plot is weak and predictable, but what I did enjoy is the gangster twist.
I was expecting it to be a bit of a rip on Finding Nemo and it kind of was only in it’s attempt to be ‘cooler’ it actually made it worse. The comedy wasn’t half as adventurous and no where near as funny, but there were a few okay moments. Most of the comedy came from the actors delivery, but the script was fairly poor and the animation could have been so much better.
The tricky thing with animation is noticeable direction, the general rule is that if direction isn’t noticeable then it is probably good because it lets you get lost in the story. This wasn’t the case for this film because it was often overambitious and with a story as weak as this, it was difficult to get lost in either.
The verdict: if you’re over eight years old, it’s not worth seeing…
