After watching the new prequel, X-Men: First Class (see earlier review), I was rather confused by this second instalment to the original trilogy. In fact I was pretty sure I had already seen this until I finished watching it not long ago; I either have no recollection of watching it, or I never have, and I’m fairly certain it’s the latter.
I was confused at how Nightwalker was blue because he’s red in the prequel, what Rogue’s purpose in the film is (she never does anything and I’m sure she did more in the cartoon) and there were far too many plot holes for me to get engulfed in the story. According to IMDB.com this is better than the first X-Men film, and I will agree that there is more action and a braver storyline, but it almost seems that the writers were too busy/lazy to figure it out properly.
In this second film, Magneto almost becomes a good guy and the bad guy is a human – an odd turn around from what I remember of the series, but yes, it does work. I have never been a huge fan of X-Men, as I said in the review for First Class, I never read the comics and I only watched the cartoon when I was very young, and not that often so I cannot remember a great deal, but I do love the concept. Of all the ‘superhero’ comics and concepts I think this is the most intriguing and believable to some degree (in a few million years perhaps) and although X-Men does not contain any of my favourite ‘superheroes’, it’s damn enjoyable to watch!
