Day 131: My Cousin Vinny (Lynn, 1992)

Two New York teenagers, Bill and Stan, are on their way to college, travelling through Alabama when they are arrested and wrongly accused of murder. All evidence points to them being the killers, so in a fit of desperation and having a lack of money, they hire Bill’s cousin, Vinny, as their lawyer. After an awkward start, having never done a trial case before, Vinny eventually gets the hang of it and manages to reveal the conclusive piece of evidence to save his cousin and his friend from the death penalty.

Starring Joe Pesci as Vinny and Marisa Tomei as his fiancée, this film is enjoyable if only for the cast. Pesci demonstrates his comedic timing with ease, not to mention his classic slapstick humour, and Tomei (who has only just, finally, reached the level of fame she deserves) is so confident in her role, it is easy to forget it is only a character.

It is not a complicated idea and I imagine not very original either, but it works! It’s well written and funny; an absolute joy to watch, but not exactly one for all the family as I had assumed.

4 star film
