Broken Arrow stars John Travolta and Christian Slater as two military officers paired up to transport nuclear weapons. After crash landing in the middle of Utah’s deserts, it becomes apparant that Travolta’s character, Deak, is involved in a plot to steal the nuclear bombs for a ransom from the US government. His ex-best friend Hale must try to stop him stealing and detonating the bombs, accompanied by a park ranger in charge of the land where they crash landed, Terry (Mathis).
The premise of the film is neither shocking nor exciting – it is exactly what you would expect from a film like this, and particularly a John Woo film. This does have an air of Face/Off about it (Woo’s more popular action flick), not in the plot but in the direction and sometimes the dialogue. Travolta gets the chance to show off his frighteningly realistic portrayal of a mad-man, and Slater gets to play the good guy, and in some ways, the romantic lead. These roles are very much what you would expect from these actors, and although this is hardly the platform to start breaking convention or pidgeonholes, it was all very samey…
It’s an average film with an average amount of excitement and tension, with an average amount of attention needed to enjoy/ notice it’s existence.
