Day 93: Balls of Fury (Garant, 2007)

Balls of Fury is a comedy about a ping pong has-been who is asked on a mission by the FBI to help capture a known gang leader who is also obsessed with ping pong. Randy Daytona must prove his ping-pong skills in order to receive an invite to Feng’s prestigious tournament to play ping-pong to the death.

When I heard about this film I thought that it was going to be a cringe-worthy spoof with little to no laughs in it… It was close… It’s not a spoof comedy but sometimes the jokes are borderline cheap and predictable, with a few genuine laughs in between, but nothing to get too excited about. The comedy is probably on a par with The Rocker, not hilarious but not too disappointing either.

There are a few recognisable faces in the mix, which does increase the comedy value somewhat when you realise what they are doing on screen, however it is never past the point of a chuckle. I was a bit stuck as to what I should give this film, it was either two stars or three, but seeing as how they got Christopher Walken in the film – who is brilliant in it – I think it deserves three…

3 star film
