Day 92: Paul Blart: Mall Cop (Carr, 2009)

This 2009 comedy, starring Kevin James, is about a mall security guard who takes his position very seriously. Acting more like he is in a Die Hard movie he doesn’t make friends easily because of his clumsy and bumbling nature. One day, however, his overestimation of his role become useful when the mall is taken over by a gang of thieves planning to steal all the money from the shops and stalls and he is the only man on the inside – more Die Hard than he had ever imaged!

Kevin James is brilliant in this film; he is adorable, funny and always on form and it was a lot more than I was expecting to get from this film. I wrongly dismissed this film for a long time since, if I remember correctly, it was straight to DVD, which usually means that the studios didn’t even have enough faith for it to do well at the cinema. I may be wrong about that but it didn’t seem like a great film from the trailers or reviews. How wrong I was – it is unexpectedly enjoyable and although it may not be a brilliant movie, it has more laughs than you might expect and will leave you with a smile on your face at the end.

Sometimes laugh out loud funny, will probably be the best film you have ever seen when drunk, but when sober it’s an average comedy with a few dull and predictable moments, and a few great moments!

3 star film
