Frenzy is a horrific, creepy and yet sometimes funny film about a psychopath who likes to rape and strangle women in his spare time. When the police begin to investigate, however, they end up following a lead on the wrong guy, who ends up in hiding when he realises he has no alibi or evidence against him.
I have not seen a lot of Hitchcock films but I know from what I have seen that he is a brilliant director. This film is evidence enough through his subtle but beautifully chosen shots and the performances he manages to capture from his talented British cast. Barry Foster, in particular, is astounding in his part as Rusk, the murderer. His character is so slimy and creepy, and not once do you remember that it is just a film and that he is just an actor playing a part throughout the film. It really does suck you in, and partly that is to do with Hitchcock’s all superior powers of direction, but the cast are all so wonderfully natural in their roles that it’s difficult not to believe in it.
Of the films I have seen by Alfred Hitchcock, this is by far the scariest and best portrait of a serial killer (I am including Psycho in that statement – although it is brilliant it receives more praise than some other Hitchcock films that clearly deserve greater praise than what they get). I may not have seen a lot of Hitchcock, but I sure am going to watch a lot more now, so if you are a fan, keep checking this blog and you will see more and more reviews of his films!
