Day 85: Thor (Branagh, 2011)

Thor (Hemsworth), God of thunder, is banished to Earth after his arrogance gets him into a lot of trouble when he tries to start a war with an alien race in another realm. After he is banished by his father (Hopkins), kind of Asgard, he meets Jane Foster (Portman), a scientist studying the stars, and although Thor is looking for a way home, Jane wants answers when she suspects he fell from the sky.

This Marvel movie is funnier than expected, with better choreographed action and more epic action than expected too. Branagh is really the star of the film as his unique and spectacular directorial style shines through each and every scene. It’s stunning to watch and the cinematography emphasises both the comedy and the action beautifully.

The whole film reeks of quality from start to finish, but then there is something within the scripting that I wasn’t entirely happy about. Like a few of the Marvel films I have watched and some I have reviewed in this blog, I have not ever read the comic books of Thor, nor do I know anything about it other than the fact that he has a hammer, but the reasoning for Thor to be banished to Earth may not have been a great move. It would make sense if this was in the comic books, and it was a clever move to incorporate comedy and hence open the film up to a wider audience, but an epic action film set in an alternate universe would have worked a lot better because there were times when the comedy was overdone.

4 star film
