Day 80: Timecop (Hyams, 1994)

Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in this sci-fi action about a time travelling cop, sent back repeatedly, and chasing after the bad guy trying to alter the past to benefit himself.

It’s an interesting idea, particularly for an action film with no soul like this one, but it’s not exactly complicated. You can tell by the dialogue that they didn’t really think it through; it’s unimaginative and dead behind the lens. Having said that, it is a thoroughly enjoyable film in the same way that certain Arnie films are – you know they are terrible but the sheer level of destruction and ass-kicking may just carry you through to the end.

In terms of acting, let’s just not go there. In terms of the action itself, some of the choreography was even quite bad, but easily ignorable with the acting as a distraction. It was a minefield of plot holes and the writers clearly don’t understand the basics of time-travel, even if it is fictional…

Reasons for giving this three stars instead of a more deserved two is the enjoyment factor – it encompasses all the good and bad things about Hollywood action films – it’s a mindless attempt at what could have been a decent film, but decent or not, it’s a hell of a lot of fun!

3 star film
