Day 77: Hancock (Berg, 2008)

From the director of Collateral comes a film about a bad superhero, John Hancock. Will Smith stars as an alcoholic, ill tempered and foul mouthed superman who tries to turn his life around when PR agent, Ray (Bateman) tries to change his image for the good.

This film is in good humour and is fun to watch, but that’s about it. No thought is required just as little thought went into some of the comedy and the overall plot. This film was made when there was a rise in popularity of superhero films, but it wasn’t the first to parody or alter the perceptions of superheroes in that way at all. I was fairly disappointed with it if I’m honest, I was expecting it to be a barrel of laughs but it was more like an appreciative smile here and there – not laugh out loud funny at all.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Will Smith play a bad guy, and although he was the hero of the film, he was an ass hole (as stated repeatedly in the film). Because I’ve not seen him play this kind of character before it was strange and Smith himself seemed a little uncomfortable with the role. I do love Will Smith, in fact, I think he’s the coolest person on Earth (even though the word ‘cool’ is no longer cool), but there was just something about the film in general that didn’t really fit his style of comedy.

The direction was also a little messy and pretentious, but it was bearable – if you’re going to watch this film, you really do need to switch off and not expect full on comedy. It’s average really.

3 star film
