This bizarre comedy/horror stars Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard as two people who meet under odd circumstances and find themselves on their way to Cuba together to investigate Mary’s (Goddard) new property – an apparently haunted castle.
As far as comedies go, this one is still funny is certain parts and therefore has held up well over time, however, there are several racist ‘jokes’ that do ruin and date the whole film. Considering the time it was made though, this was considered ‘normal’, but there is nothing funny about racism – even when it’s Bob Hope saying those things. This did knock the film down a whole star in my eyes because, although it was pretty standard in them days and everyone was obviously very ignorant (just take a look a black American history!), the creators have never heard of the word ‘timeless’.
Enough of my rant… Apart from that, as I said, it is quite funny and the comedy timing of all the actors is brilliant – and I couldn’t get over how glamorous Goddard looked in this film! It’s classic Hollywood with a Mel Brooks twist (although this was obviously before Brooks) and unfortunately they just beat Brooks to the punch with the lowest form of comedy, racism that is.
Possibly worth a watch – not to be taken seriously although some scenes do suggest otherwise, and the comedy does take a while to kick in. But enjoyable and easy to watch.
