This is another film I have been meaning to watch for a while, about a team of mountain climbers who get trapped in a cave after an avalanche sparking a rescue mission by their peers. The premise of the film is great and they could have done a lot with this film – a lot more than what they actually did, that is. Initially from the opening scene, although it looks cheap, it looks like it’s going to be an action packed adventure thrill ride with spectacular special effects and stunts… It was not. Then, after this realisation I thought that they could still turn it around, turning it into a 127 Hours type of film, making use of the stunning scenery and, although not action packed, still keeping the audiences’ attention with drama, emotion and awesome cinematography… They did not.
Instead it was boring, over-acted and shamelessly cheap with a lot of close shots – some of which I’m sure were green screen shots – of the scenery that could have boosted the quality slightly. The writers continuously tried pushing the emotions throughout, but they blew their load with the opening scene – what could have been the most emotional moment – because it wasn’t emotional for the fact that there was a severe lack of characterisation before it all kicked off.
It wasn’t a terrible film but there was so much missing from it for it to be exciting or emotional, and with only one really great shot in the entire film, the cinematography was let down enormously.
