Day 62: Conan the Barbarian (Milius, 1982)

When an evil warlord, appropriately called Thulsa Doom, attacks a small village he kills all its residents and captures their children for slavery. Among these children is Conan (Schwarzenegger) who, once he reaches the right age, decides that he wants to avenge his parents by killing Doom!

The plot is basic but classic, and it is a film I’ve been meaning to watch for at least ten years, but have never got round to seeing. I have to say that after such an epic wait, it really wasn’t worth it. I thought the film was about half an hour too long, and that half an hour was mostly filled with pointless montages of Arnie being buff and manly, fighting giant snakes and raping women for example. As far as I could see, these things did not carry the plot or characterisation, slowing down the whole, painful process.

There were, I believe, merely two moments where the direction shone, but the rest of the film reeked of poor dialogue with a distinctly cheap after-taste. The upcoming release of the new Conan film is obviously what sparked an interest in finally watching this film, and since actually watching this, I have less of a desire to watch the remake, despite how good it may look on the trailers.

Overall, not a lot of thought has gone into the making of this film, but perhaps not a lot of thought should go into watching it either – either way, assuming it actually had a budget, a waste of Hollywood’s money…

2 star film
