Lethal Weapon is a film I should have watched years ago but never managed it, and I sorely wish I could say I was disappointed with it. This buddy cop action flick is a sound film in many places, but cinematically it made me want to cry! There are so many awkward edits and the cinematography itself constantly seems a few feet off; almost as if they couldn’t get it right after a few takes and then couldn’t be bothered to reshoot them. But after the first ten minutes I realised that this didn’t matter at all – this is one of the greatest action films I have ever seen for its cheesy and shameless approach to its generic conventions with an after taste of Starsky & Hutch.
Danny Glover is Danny Glover and Mel Gibson’s acting is terrifying in parts considering the roles he had already had at this point in his career (and was much better in), but none of it really matters. As a film studies graduate I am constantly assessing the technical and creative abilities of the cast and crew, but this is a film that finally managed to switch off my brain… in a good way!
Unnecessary explosions, cartoon style villains and Magnum P.I.’s lost soundtrack create an awesome film all in all – awesome to switch off to, awesome to watch when there’s nothing else to watch and awesome to enjoy with some beers and a pizza… but generally speaking, it’s a bit shit…
