Annie (Wigg) has recently gone through a huge break-up and the loss of her cake shop business when her best friend Lillian (Rudolph) announces her engagement. Unfortunately for her, Annie is about to lose her best friend too. Lillian’s future husband has a completely different group of friends and Lillian begins to change from who Annie knows her to be.
Lillian selects Annie to be her maid of honour over her new friend, Helen (Byrne), and the three of them, including some other colourful characters, go on their hen party and begin to plan their friends’ wedding. I think that, above all, Kristen Wigg really stood out of the crowd and to find out that she had co-written the script was also a nice reaffirmation of her comedic abilities. Melissa McCarthy was spectacular as the spunky and tough Megan and Chris O’Dowd was confirmation of the brilliantly thought out casting as well as his ability to conquer everything comedy.
With Judd Apatow producing, the level of comedy is as expected which is great, but what makes it better is that it isn’t necessarily something you would expect from what is essentially a ‘chick flick’. There are plenty of jokes to keep anyone entertained, from a little giggle to potentially crying with laughter, but one criticism is that there are one or two jokes that go on about five minutes too long, and with that in mind, I don’t think it would be worth seeing the inevitable unrated version.
