Day 134: The Adjustment Bureau (Nolfi, 2011)

Writer and producer, George Nolfi, tries his hand at directing in this sci-fi thriller starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. The story is about an FBI style bureau who ensure that humans stick to their life plans that have been written by a higher power. These plans, however, do not involve a romance between David Norris (Damon) and Elise (Blunt) and the bureau’s agents must keep them apart no matter what, but apparently true love never dies.

I heard that this film was Inception meets The Bourne Identity – but don’t set yourself up for disappointment. The originality (sort of) and sci-fi aspect is all that ties it to Inception, and the only thing it has in common with The Bourne Identity is Matt Damon running a lot. This is not to say it is a bad film. For a directorial debut, Nolfi is spectacular. He has the skill and expertise as someone who has been in the business for years – it is flawless. Nolfi really sucks you into the story through the cinematography and, unsurprisingly, he is to thank for the screenplay too.

One thing I would suggest is to get it in your head that it is a sci-fi film before you watch it. I didn’t do sufficient research into the plot before watching it and assumed it would be a drama about a politician. The sci-fi aspect can take you by surprise and seem a little hammy if you don’t know this beforehand, but once you sink into it, it won’t let you go.

4 star film
