Day 124: Bad Taste (Jackson, 1987)

This is a strange example of Peter Jackson’s early work about a small-scale alien invasion in a small town somewhere in New Zealand. As one of Jackson’s first feature length films it’s not half bad, although it is sort of what would happen if you gave a 13-year-old boy a camera and a budget – it’s very much in the line of a young boys fantasy of gratuitous blood and guts, aliens and unnecessarily sized weapons a la Evil Dead.

I would rather not discuss the acting in the film, to be honest it’s not amazing, and although Peter Jackson has quite a prominent role in the film, it’s still not impressive and he probably is better off behind the camera. Even though this is one of his first films, it does speak volumes of his directorial abilities – as an early example it’s easy to pick up on some of his favourite techniques that were improved through time, and there is a whiff of genius throughout that, unsurprisingly, was picked up on.

It certainly makes for interesting viewing, especially if you’re a Jackson fan – I am not especially, meaning that I like his direction but I won’t go out of my way to watch his films, but nonetheless it’s enjoyable and rather funny.

3 star film
