Day 119: Melody Time (Geronimi, Jackson, Kinney & Luske, 1948)

This is yet another music based Disney film that fails to surpass Fantasia. Similar to Make Mine Music (also reviewed in this blog) it is a mix of various forms of ‘modern’ music to Disney’s animation. The animation is even similar to that of Make Mine Music and I was even wondering at the time whether I was just watching the same film again.

I believe this is the only other music based animation other than those mentioned above, and I think that is probably for the best. Where Fantasia makes for some great viewing with brilliant animation and stories to follow along with the beautifully chosen classical score, this and Make Mine Music seem rushed. The animation is not great, and the music, although it is good, is not spectacularly chosen as a device to show off animation to.
It is okay to watch although not as visually and audibly stunning as Fantasia and it falls short on the entertainment front. Not really worth watching unless you are a huge fan of Disney’s older work.

3 star film
