Hot Rod is a movie about a young man called Rod who claims to be a stunt man. Attempting to earn the respect of his stepfather, he challenges him to countless fights, all of which his stepfather wins. Then, one day, Rod’s stepfather becomes ill and will soon die without a heart transplant. Rod takes it upon himself to perform a stunt to raise money for the transplant, just so he can finally kick his stepfather’s ass and become a man.
I should probably point out, at this point, that this is a comedy; a comedy in a similar light to Anchorman, Superbad and Balls of Fury – very random, sometimes dirty and sometimes just not funny at all (in that order). I realise that this style of comedy has a huge appeal and has since Anchorman, but Anchorman was actually funny! I didn’t find this as funny as I was hoping, I was hoping for a more subtle style of comedy which can sometimes be a lot funnier. It just sort of felt like a wild attempt at being as random as Anchorman but it failed miserably. A lot of the time they seemed to be prolonging the story unnecessarily, presumably because they realised that they didn’t really have a decent enough plot to keep people interested…
It’s not a bad film, just disappointing, but yes, I’ll admit, there are a few funny bits, and it’s worth a viewing if you’re looking for some mind-numbing laughs and not a lot of detail.
