Day 115: Cedar Rapids (Arteta, 2011)

Ed Helms and John C. Reilly star as insurance salesmen who meet at an annual convention. While there Tim Lippe (Helms) discovers some terrible truths about the company he has loved and worked for, for years of his life.

The comedy is dark, sometimes dirty and always odd, it is a great film. As an independent film there is nowhere it won’t venture, but director Arteta ensures it does it with class, in other words, the film doesn’t ever sink as low as American Pie for laughs, and it keeps an eye on a half-decent plot throughout.

I must warn you that it isn’t a laugh out loud comedy, and nor are the performances amazing – I thought Ed Helms had a good, solid character to work with and so he played it brilliantly, he was funny and consistent throughout. Reilly, on the other hand, was hugely disappointing since I’m usually rooting for him through any of his films – he is always my favourite star! In this though, I cannot decide whether it was him or his dialogue that caused him to fall down; he was not quite as funny as I have seen him in the past.

Nonetheless it’s a great film to watch, a mindless comedy but with a great message behind it and lovable characters you can connect with during.

3 star film
