Day 106: Super (Gunn, 2010)

Super is a film in the same class as Kick-Ass – a nerdy nobody with no super powers decides to fight crime. The premise for this film is, however, somewhat different to Kick-Ass in that Frank (Wilson), our protagonist, has lost his wife to a gang of drug dealers who are keeping her doped up and sedated. After an odd vision he decides to make a suit and go to fight crime, using a wrench as his weapon…

The film is an odd one, it’s one that I really wanted to enjoy, but couldn’t bring myself to all that much. It’s obvious that it’s supposed to be a comedy, but it isn’t at all funny. Okay, there are a few moments of mild amusement, but the rest of it is either pathetic or just in bad taste.

Generally though, it is okay to watch. It looks like a home video with a few weak special effects, which pulls away from the excitement and action of the film, but having said all this, I don’t feel it deserves any less than three stars. It is genuine and the director/writer shows promise. Perhaps it’s just not for me, but whether you enjoy it or not, it deserves a little love if not only for Ellen Page – the best thing about this film!
The verdict: Not as good as Kick-Ass… Sorry…

3 star film
