Day 105: Crash (Cronenberg, 1996)

This is an odd and perverse film by David Cronenberg, based on the 1970s novel of the same name. The story follows a group of people who get their sexual kicks from watching and being involved in car crashes, and in case you were wondering, it is a real fetish…

The film stars James Spader and Holly Hunter, both of whom have had experience with borderline pornographic movies, and both of whom play their parts brilliantly. It can be uncomfortable to watch but then, so it should be. Cronenberg’s direction is flawless and the only complaint I would have about the film is that it is far more boring than it should be considering the themes and general narrative. Nothing much happens, although you may disagree, it just seems to me like it was a lot of sex and whispering with the odd car crash here and there. I was frustrated that the plot didn’t seem to be going anywhere – it is literally just about people with a strange fetish and about them carrying out their fetish, shall we say.

Overall it’s a good watch, not good enough for a rewatch but perhaps something everyone should watch for how perverse and well made it is.

4 star film
