Day 89: The Inbetweeners Movie (Palmer, 2011)

From the creators and stars of The Inbetweeners television show comes a movie about Will, Jay, Simon and Neil and their holiday to Malia. There is not much of a plot to the whole thing, and it’s pretty much like an extra long episode which is probably the best they could have made about it. For those of you who do not know, The Inbetweeners is a British television show about four teenagers: Will is a social disaster and a nerd, Jay is the horniest person that ever lived and a compulsive liar about his apparent sexual endeavours, Simon is the sensitive one who can never get anything right, and Neil is just an idiot. They have only made three short series of the show, yet they decided it would be a good idea to make a movie at this early stage – they were partly right.

The film itself is well made, and although the TV show is never about anything in particular, there could have been more of a plot to the movie. Besides the four boys going to Malia, that’s it! Some embarrassing and disgusting things happen during their holiday, and it is very much the same kind of humour to that of the TV series, but there are certain episodes where they outdid themselves – I didn’t get the same feeling from the film. It was almost as if they were holding back slightly for the mass appeal and although there are certainly some grotesque and cringe-worthy moments, it was child’s play compared to where they have boldly ventured to in the show.

It is worth a watch and I can guarantee that you will laugh at some point, only please don’t watch it without watching the series first – it’s better and you will have a greater understanding of the characters, and that’s where most of the comedy does come from.

3 star film
