Day 8: C.R.A.Z.Y. (Valee, 2005)

This is a Canadian, French language film which was recommended to me through a friend on Facebook and I’m so glad I watched it, it is visually stunning. The story follows the life of Zac and his family as he tries to make his parents proud and struggles with some sibling rivalry with one of his older brothers Raymond. As they get older, Raymond turns to sex and drugs while Zac turns to music, going through all the familiar fazes of adolescence. Being accused of being gay turns Zac into a rebel and he eventually gets alienated from his family, though his striving for attention never seems to falter.

As I’ve said, the cinematography is awe-inspiring and the choice and placement of music is brilliantly devised. What I found about this movie as well is that the characters are so well written that by the end of the movie, it feels like you know them personally. I didn’t want the film to end and shortly after it had I found myself missing the characters, wishing there was more to see of them. The dialogue is great and although nothing much happens in the film it never gets boring. There isn’t much to say about the plot without giving something away, so I won’t, but I cannot stress enough how fixated I was by the camera work and the characters.

This is a film I would definitely recommend if you can get hold of it so watch the trailer (posted above) and if you like that, you’ll love this film!

5 star film
