This is a film about four best friends who each have separate plans over the summer. As each of them will be in other states and in one case, a different country, they promise to write to each other all the time, but not only that – when shopping one day they come across a pair of pants that fits each of them perfectly, despite them all being different sizes and heights. After buying the pants they also promise to mail the pants to each other over the summer so they each get a turn to wear these ‘magic’ pants. They pray to the pants, they talk about the pants constantly, yet despite the pants being the main focal point of the plot, they are hardly ever mentioned past the half hour mark of the film.
I think that the worst thing about this film is that it’s based on a novel with the same concept – a concept which barely carries the plot of the characters’ summer and holiday romances. I think the direction is okay although nothing special, the soundtrack is awfully predictable and it’s generally just a bad, teeny, girly, trashy movie with nothing going for it but certain cast members such as Tamblyn and Ferrera. All is not totally lost because there is a sense of direction, but it’s a very close call, firstly because of the bloody pants, secondly because of the lack of plot, and thirdly because of the sheer lack of shame for all involved.
In my opinion, no film (or novel) should ever be based around a pair of so called ‘magical’ pants unless it’s target audience is below eight years old… Also, they’re probably not magical, just elasticated…
