Day 44: Pretty In Pink (Deutch, 1986)

Howard Deutch’s directorial debut stars Molly Ringwald as Andie, a high school misfit dreaming of a perfect date for prom. After finding what seems to be the man of her dreams she is shot down when she realises that he comes from a rich background when she is not so well off. Desperately lusted after by her friend Duckie (Cryer), Andie is asked out by the man of her dreams and when everything falls apart, Duckie is there for her.
This is a pretty standard 80s teeny film with all of John Hughes’ (writer) charm thrown in. There isn’t much to the plot besides a slight outreach when we discover Andie’s mother abandoned her and her father when she was younger, and the odd reference to wealth and class, this is pretty similar to every other film within it’s genre. It is a true 80s classic but there is nothing to make it stand out among some of the better Hughes movies due to its shamelessly conventional narrative.

Jon Cryer is probably the best thing in this film – his character is witty and weird and he’s perfect for the part, and my heart really goes out to his character when he longs for the love of Andie. Really a spectacularly played part and he does make this film.

It’s an enjoyable film with a lot to offer and it does attract attention from viewers yet it’s still missing something that could have turned it from something which blends in with the rest in the genre into something that stands out and something which prompts a repeat viewing.

3 star film
