Day 42: Gnomeo & Juliet (Asbury, 2011)

Gnomeo & Juliet is a thoroughly enjoyable take on the Shakespearian classic taking place in the gardens of a man and a woman, Montague and Capulet – two rivals in competition over their gardens, and in the gardens live a host of gnomes and other characters. The basis of the story is Romeo and Juliet, but the film avoids most of the details that really define the classic. I would normally say that it would be impossible to ruin this film since every one should know the story so well by now, but it’s so different I will have to tread very carefully so I don’t give anything away.

There are clever references throughout to Shakespeare’s original, including an appearance from Shakey himself and there are also references from other films; Forrest Gump and American Beauty are a couple I can remember. It is, essentially, a kids film but like all good family films, there is a lot for adults to laugh at too, including a voice cameo from Hulk Hogan in a hilarious lawn mower advert. Speaking of the cast, each and every actor has been carefully selected and Emily Blunt in particular manages to accomplish a lot considering she is using only her voice for the role.

The film echoes quality from the opening scene is incredibly sharp and witty throughout. It really is a film that anyone could enjoy with an array of different comedic styles from the writing and the cast. It’s thoroughly enjoyable and constantly one step ahead of any guessing from the audience.

4 star film
