Day 33: Enchanted (Lima, 2007)

In the animated and sugar-coated world of Disney fairy tales, Giselle (Adams) finds and falls in love with her Prince Charming, Edward (Marsden). But after the Queen hears of Edward’s marriage, in fear of having her crown taken from her, she banishes Giselle to real-world New York. There she meets a host of people, all of whom find her mentally deranged as she tells them of her fairy tale land, but one man, Robert (Dempsey) stands by her side through thick and thin.

It’s a brilliantly feel good movie with all of the conventions of fairy tale movies with a modern romantic comedy twist, narrated quite rightly by the gorgeous and brilliant Julie Andrews. And, by God, do I love Timothy Spall! Timothy Spall is brilliant in this film as the Queen’s henchman, sent to New York to kill the princess with a clichéd poisoned apple. Amy Adams subtly plays up the comedy and combined with James Marsden’s melodramatic portrayal of Prince Edwards, it makes for a very enjoyable film, although perhaps not for everyone.

There are enough references to keep film buffs happy, especially nods to certain fantasy films and a few Disney films too, but fundamentally it’s a family film that should be thoroughly enjoyed by all – especially the kids.

4 star film
