Day 30: Eat, Pray Love (Murphy, 2010)

Eat, Pray, Love is not only the title of the film, it’s the synopsis too. Julia Roberts plays Liz, a woman searching herself after realising that she isn’t where she wants to be in her life, consequently getting a divorce. Liz travels the world, going to all the places she has always dreamed of and learning new things along the way. First stop is Italy where she learns the language and meets some great friends while eating a lot along the way. Secondly she goes to India, trying to find herself in a new religion, instead finding a fellow divorcee whom she befriends – this part of the film involves a lot of praying… Her last stop on her journey is Bali where… yes, you guessed it… she finds love.

It’s quite a charming film with a nice message and a nice feel good twist to it. The direction is sound and the acting is quite beautifully natural which brings more emotion to the film. I do have a love/hate relationship with Julia Roberts – I do sometimes find her slightly annoying – in Notting Hill I hated her, in Erin Brockovich I loved her and I hated her in Ocean’s Eleven, but I absolutely loved her in this film. She sank into the character with such ease and remained totally devoted to her role. She was genuinely charming in this movie, as were her co-stars, the only thing about the film is that it wasn’t an especially exciting film; there was nothing in particular that made me want to continue watching it, although having said that I was glad that I did.

It is a girly film which kind of makes me want to love it, but it’s nothing to write home about…

3 star film
