This film is based on a true story about the closure of the Northern English mines which could mean the end of a group of miners’ brass band. This is a rather upsetting film due to the subject matter, but with the film being, primarily, a comedy, it’s much easier to watch than you might think.
It is enjoyable and uplifting in the same way that The Full Monty is, and shares Monty’s spot as one of the greatest British films of recent years. Stars Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaite and Tara Fitzgerald are amazing and they fill the movie with so much emotion that you really would have to be dead inside not to be moved by their spectacular performances or indeed the subject matter itself. It is easily the greatest performance by the late and great Postlethwaite too.
Brassed Off is a classic piece of British cinema and depicts an important part of Britain’s recent history immortalised in great form, but it is perhaps not for those who are easily upset.
