With stars such as Tim Allen, Christian Slater, Billy Connolly, Portia De Rossi and Richard Dreyfuss, this film is oozing comedic talent. Who Is Cletis Tout? is a comedy crime movie about mistaken identities. Critical Jim (Allen) is a hit man ordered to kill Cletis Tout, although when Finch (Slater) takes Tout’s identity in the hope of fleeing the law after a diamond heist, he tries to explain how Critical Jim may have the wrong guy.
I didn’t know that this was going to be a comedy and so it was a little strange to me at first. Upon seeing Allen I wondered but still thought that it might be a serious crime drama – it is not. It is probably best to know this beforehand to avoid confusion, seeing as it is quite a good film, just not without knowing it’s a comedy.
Chris Ver Wiel has, to this date, only directed two movies – this and Waiting Game in 1996, and it is a bit of a shame since he seems to have quite a natural talent for it. This film will never win awards, and it may not be memorable, but it’s a good first watch, laid back, funny and doesn’t require too much thought.
