Joe Cornish’s directorial debut is the story about a gang of teenagers on a council estate who find themselves in the middle of an alien invasion. After successfully killing one alien they decide to fight off the invaders to protect their block, only to find that the alien they managed to kill was only a small female, and now they have to fight off the horde.
Cornish is clearly a great director with a natural talent for it – what I did notice is the odd homage to what looks like 1980s low-budget horror movies which was a nice touch. The film was very enjoyable which was mostly to do with the direction and particularly the script, I feel. The cast was great too however I did feel that there were a few loose ends there to do with the quality of acting, but nothing major, and although the dialogue is funny, some of it was repeated one too many times to try to regurgitate laughs which didn’t work.
I read somewhere that this was the new Shaun of the Dead – don’t hype this film up that much though! Yes, it is a great film – funny, thoroughly entertaining and generally a quality film, but it’s not the modern-day classic that Shaun turned out to be.
